QECC tools for extraction of information from ORPS

A major source of QECC information.has been the DOE Occurrence Reporting and Processing System (ORPS), a very large database of narrative descriptions of incidents ar DOE facilities. An ORPS bulletin article about QECC describes the application of incident reports to characterization of contamination.

ORPS users (a small subset of authorized DOE and DOE-contractor staff) have access to a powerful database search facility through a web-based graphical user interface (GUI). However, the focus of the ORPS GUI is the subset retrieval and delivery of summary plots and reports. The mechanism provided for downloading records is crude but efficient -- the user can obtain a series of printable reports streamed together in an ASCII text file.

The QECC staff have developed several software tools to aid in extracting information from ORPS. If you use the ORPS GUI, you may find these useful for post-processing ASCII TEXT files created by the 'OR Download' report option. We use a word processor to post-process the file, and have developed several macros to automate the process.

Macros to format file for printing:

  • ORPS_WP a ZIP file containing a WordPerfect macro for inserting page breaks and deleting blank lines. This macro has been tested using WordPerferct 6.1 and WordPerfect 8.
  • OR_Word a ZIP file containing a MS Word 97 macro for inserting page breaks.

Macros for parsing file into delimited text for import into spreadsheet, database, etc.:

  • OR_parse a ZIP file containing a WordPerfect (6,7,or 8) macro for parsing the ORPS paragraphs into delimited text for import by analysis software.
  • A collection of Word Perfect macros applicable to downloaded ORPS files.
